Ba gua means "8 houses" or "palaces", and refers to the 8 areas of an individual's life which surround the health center, encompassing a total of 9 areas. 

We use the bagua layout as a map to the areas of the environment being analyzed, such as your home or office. Traditionally an 8-sided octagon shape, we can extend the bagua into a square or rectangle to make a bagua map that is easier to apply to most floor plans.

We lay this bagua map (shown at the left) over the floor plan of the house, aligned so that the front door of the home falls into one of the front sectors -Knowledge & Self-Cultivation, Career, or Helpful People.

Once you have aligned the bagua map with your home, you can then easily identify the areas of your life that are associated with each section of your home.

Some individuals live in spaces that have areas that are "missing" or that fall outside of the house structure. Remember to include any structures that are attached to the home or are under roof or screen such as attached garages, screened porches, or covered balconies.
